What data means for news organizations?

David Levy, Director of the Reuters Institute, opened the Big Data for Media 2014 conference in London. Reuters Institute is a research institute based in Oxford and a think tank. The Institute has also a journalist fellow program for mid-career journalists.

Research agenda in the Reuters Institute:
Business of journalism
Practice of journalism
Journalism and democracy

Some major projects in the Reuters Institute: changing business models, data visualization and digital news report 2012-2015.

The times have changed from the old days. The old news organizations knew nothing about their customers. But after digitalization the media world has become more complex commercially and there are also more editorial opportunities rising from the big data.

Levy presented some insights from the Digital news report 2013. 50% of people buy a newspaper every week, but only 5% pay for digital news. Even though the digital paying is on a low level, it has increased just in one year.

The more devices you have, the more you look at the news during the day. Digital users also consume via traditional platforms.

Social media commenting depends on your country. Social media users of Brazil, Spain, Italy and US comment more on social media than the users in Japan and Germany.
