Starting up a Visual Journalism Unit at the BBC

Amanda Farnsworth, Head of BBC’s Visual Journalism unit, spoke about her work as head of the BBC's new visual journalism unit at the Big Data for Media conference on May 8 in London, sponsored by World Newsmedia Network and Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism.

She defines the goals of her visual journalism unit as: " We want to use our skill and creativity to engage and inform our audiences on the biggest, most significant stories, providing insightful, personal and sharable explanation."

She says that in the overcrowded market there are three challenges: "Distinctiveness, Liveliness and modernity, and Understanding." The visual unit of BBC is currently experimenting with interactive videos and TouchCast ( http://www.touchcast.com/), a new medium that "looks like a video but feels like a web," according to TouchCast website. On May 19, the BBC is launching Daily Infographic that provides you info through visual presentation. It will be first launched in English and later in five different BBC language platform, including Arabic.
